China Develops Power Station That Can Charge EVs In Just 12 Minutes

Chinese electric vehicle company NIO has developed a charging system that can charge 500 kilowatts in just 12 minutes. The new system can charge an electric car from approximately 10 to 80 percent in 12 minutes.

The innovative new NIO EV system enables non-NIO EV customers to use the new charging infrastructure. Additionally, non-NIO EV customers should check that their batteries are compatible with 500kW chargers.
According to the Chinese EV manufacturer, the charging station can charge 800-volt electric vehicles faster than 400-volt platforms.

In contrast, 400V EVs require 20 minutes to charge 80%. At the same time, the 800V types require a total of 12 minutes.
Additionally, the ultra-fast charger features a 15.6-inch screen and NIO’s patented liquid cooling technology. This makes the charging cable lighter and easier to hold in one hand.

In addition, it is the first EV manufacturer to announce the highest charging capacity EV charging infrastructure. It is the fastest charging system with a charging capacity of 500 kW. However, it follows Xpeng’s 480kW charging system earlier this year.

On the other hand, with an output of 670 amps, Xpeng Superchargers can charge Xpeng EVs from 0 to 80% in just 15 minutes.
This charger was created in response to the growing demand for fast and practical charging options for electric vehicles.

However, earlier this year, a local competitor Xpeng unveiled its charger with a maximum power of 480kW.
Company founder and president William Lee announced that all electric vehicle brands are welcome to use the company's charging platform. In addition, 80.5% of the electricity supplied is used by more than 110 other car brands.

This demonstrates NIO's commitment to providing reliable and convenient charging options for electric vehicle customers, regardless of vehicle brand.

In addition, Li also said that NIO's charging network is the largest of its kind in the world. He emphasizes the company's leadership in the electric vehicle charging industry.

According to NIO, the company's vehicles consume 19.5 percent of the electricity generated by its charging network, compared to 20.4 percent for BYD vehicles. 12% for Tesla vehicles, 3.4% for Xpeng vehicles and 2.9% for Li vehicles. This statistic shows the different electric vehicle brands that use the NIO charging network. Not only this, but different models of electric vehicles require a wide range of charging.

NIO has 1,284 battery exchange stations and 2,239 charging stations in China. In total, it provides 13,083 charging points for electric vehicle drivers. Therefore, these charging plugs include fast charging plugs, especially for recharging electric vehicles. Destination plugs, on the other hand, charge more slowly but are convenient for users on long trips who need to charge their cars overnight.

In addition, NIO will increase the daily capacity of its battery exchange stations to 408 battery exchanges. According to the Chinese company, the 500 kW battery charger and upgraded switching station will start operations from March 2023. With innovations like these, NIO aims to unite electric car brands like Lucid and Tesla.
