Microsoft plans new ways to save power from PC and console gaming

The world energy market is undergoing a major crisis, with the European Union and the United Kingdom being hit hardest. Countries such as Germany have asked for their citizens to reduce power consumption, while the UK may experience blackouts during peak hours this winter. Amid this crisis Microsoft is taking some steps to save energy by making changes to its gaming platforms.

Microsoft is looking for gamers to fill out the Xbox Insiders Program. They’ll ask about how much you can save on electricity by switching to power-saving mode, or going into standby mode. The company has also redesigned the game console’s power settings menu with a quick, at-a-glance display that helps show how much advanced users will be able to save.

According to a report from WindowsCentral, a survey running on the Xbox Insider app on Windows PCs outlines some of the new features Microsoft might be planning to add to gaming on PCs and consoles. The main goal of these features is to reduce power consumption, and the company may be planning to do the same by lowering resolution, frame rate, and more.

According to the report, the survey includes questions that try to find out how users see energy consumption and if the current crisis is affecting their willingness to spend. The survey distributed by the company asks users about their interest in power-reduction features in games that can save power and money. This includes both types of situations that arise during gaming sessions: while the game is running or when it is idle.

Aside from this, Microsoft also asks users to suggest names for these features. The company provided options for terms such as “environmental saving” and “energy saving”, which users can choose from. The tech giant also wants to know if these features will influence users’ purchasing decisions for each game.

Microsoft committed to net zero carbon emissions, which also increased the company’s investment in this area. However, there is no guarantee that the features mentioned in the survey will make it to the final product.
